Care workers and home carers
Job Overview
Care Workers and Home Carers provide essential support to individuals who need help with their daily lives, including elderly people, those with disabilities, or individuals recovering from illness. The role involves assisting with personal care such as washing, dressing and toileting, preparing meals and supporting clients with eating and drinking, administering or reminding them to take medication, and offering companionship and emotional support. Care workers also help with mobility, exercise, and attending appointments, as well as carrying out household tasks like cleaning, laundry and shopping. They are responsible for monitoring health and wellbeing and reporting any concerns to healthcare professionals when necessary.
To work as a Care Worker or Home Carer, you should have a compassionate attitude, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage sensitive situations with patience and respect. While previous experience in care or a qualification such as NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care is beneficial, it is not always required. The role often involves flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends, either in a residential care facility or by visiting clients in their own homes. With experience and further training, care workers can progress to more senior positions, move into specialised healthcare roles, or use this as a pathway into nursing and related professions.
